Virginia Attractions
Barter Theatre; Abingdon, VA
 Named
for the practice of "bartering" or offering goods in exchange for
the price of admission, the Barter Theatre has entertained audiences
with professional actors in classic roles since the height of the
Depression in 1933. While most patrons brought produce or canned
goods in place of the original 35-cent ticket, more creative offerings
reputedly included a live hog and a dead rattlesnake! These days,
credit cards are more commonly used, in the 507 seat theatre, to
enjoy such fare as On Golden Pond, The Importance of Being Earnest,
Something's Afoot, Oklahoma!, South Pacific and To Kill A Mockingbird.
Barter's Stage II is housed in a building that was first constructed
as a church in 1829. In 1961, the building was renovated by Barter
as a small theatre, with major improvements over the next three
decades. The unique performance space features 140 seats around
a thrust stage where performances such as Macbeth and Talley's Folly
take place.
